Dance Floor Heretics

Adelaide’s underground collective keeping the spirit of authentic rave culture alive.

The Genesis: From Continuous Flow to Cultural Movement

Dance Floor Heretics isn’t just another streetwear brand or event promoter — it’s a cultural bridge connecting the sweat-soaked warehouse parties of 1990s Adelaide to today’s underground techno scene. Founded by rave veterans Paul Hamon and Nathan Hughes (DJ BOF), the collective emerged from the legendary Continuous Flow events that shaped South Australia’s dance music landscape during the pre-social media era.

“By ravers for ravers since 1993,” is more than a tagline. As they say on their homepage: “Dance Floor Heretics is more than a label, it is a collective of like-minded people whose love for dance music, raving and clubbing has united them since before they even met.”

Preserving History, Creating Legacy

The collective’s roots trace back to Smile, a seminal 1995 rave in the Adelaide Hills that drew 300–400 ravers to a secret location revealed only hours before the event. Attendees navigated by hand-drawn maps and whispered directions, finding a neon-lit sanctuary where techno, house, and breakbeats pulsed until dawn. This wasn’t just a party — it was a cultural touchstone that defined what “underground” meant.

In August 2025, Hamon and Hughes reignited that flame with “Still Smiling”, a 30th-anniversary reunion at Fuego by the Sea featuring original DJs including Nathan “BOF” Hughes, Chad “Devious” Bergman, Shane “ESF” Francis, and Jason “FLIP” Littler.

The Sound: Raw, Relentless Techno

Dance Floor Heretics champions high-energy techno built for the dance floor. Their December 2024 debut EP, “Dance Floor Heretics 01 EP” on Urban Kickz Recordings, delivers four uncompromising tracks:

  • Weekend (6:48)
  • Deadly Funk (6:15)
  • Retrovirus (6:24)
  • Get Off My (6:29)

Beyond studio releases, DJ BOF stays active with livestreams like New Rave Experience, Blissful Techno with DJ BOF, and collaborative sets — keeping the community-first spirit of early rave culture alive while using modern platforms.

Apparel That Tells a Story

The Dance Floor Heretics apparel line goes beyond typical festival merch. Limited-edition pieces are designed to “withstand hours of sweat-inducing rhythmic gyrations,” featuring bold slogans and designs grounded in techno culture.

Signature Collection highlights:

  • 90s Retro Club Zip-Up Jacket ($119.95 AUD)
  • All-Logos Yellow Button Up ($69.95 AUD)
  • “100% Raver” Polo

The Early 90s Club List T-Shirt doubles as wearable history, featuring a nostalgic roll-call of Adelaide venues that shaped the local dance scene — a nod for veterans and a primer for newcomers.

Additional ranges like Anthems, Enchanted Forest, and Reunion Festival aren’t just product lines — they’re chapters of local rave history tied to specific moments and events.

Social Responsibility Through Beats

The “Tell Your Friends” collection backs the community in a real way, donating $10 from each purchase to Lifeline for mental health advocacy.

Events: The Underground Sessions

Dance Floor Heretics runs the ongoing Underground Session series in Adelaide, with events regularly selling out within two weeks. These intimate gatherings recapture the energy of secret 90s warehouse parties through curated lineups and carefully chosen venues. Recent events include Halloween-themed nights and “Underground Session 4 – Age of Aquarians” at Cosmos Club.

Their crown jewel was the Heaven Reunion Festival, drawing 4,800 people using local talent — proof that a scene can go big without relying on overseas headliners.

Global Reach, Local Roots

While firmly rooted in Adelaide, Dance Floor Heretics has built worldwide distribution. Their music is available on Beatport, Bandcamp, Traxsource, Spotify, and Apple Music, while merchandise ships to 28 countries. For committed supporters, Patreon offers exclusive DJ sets, behind-the-scenes content, and early access to limited releases.

They also stream on Twitch and archive sets on Mixcloud and YouTube, keeping the message moving across dance floors worldwide.

The Philosophy: No Heroes Except Ones & Zeroes

In an era of camera-first festivals and corporate-sponsored EDM, Dance Floor Heretics backs something harder to fake: community. Their “No Heroes Except Ones & Zeroes” slogan rejects celebrity DJ worship in favour of the code and culture that powers underground music.

They’re not freezing history in place — they’re building on it. From that first secret Smile party in 1995 to sold-out Underground Sessions in 2026, Dance Floor Heretics keeps uniting people through the only thing that matters: the music and the connections made on dance floors, not screens.
